Obituary

Stacy Ledbetter Mattox, Jr.

Stacy Ledbetter Mattox Jr. passed away at his home in Madison July 13th.  Stacy was born in Savannah June 11, 1917 to parents Stacy Sr. and Emmie Rebecca (Waters).  He was a long time resident of Savannah, attending public schools and serving two apprenticeships as a machinist for Savannah businesses before enlisting in the Navy in October 1941.  He served as a Machinist Mate aboard the destroyer USS Little until he was transferred to the US Navy hospital San Diego with a stomach disorder which led to a medical discharge.  He returned to Savannah and went to work for the American Can Co. where he rose to the position of Master Machinist/Die Maker.  In 1966 he was transferred to the Atlanta area where he continued to work until his retirement in 1980.  In retirement Stacy surprised his family, friends, and even himself by becoming an accomplished visual artist after taking art classes at his local junior college.  He is preceded in death by his first wife, Margret (Douglas) Mattox, his second wife Floralee (Brock) Mattox, and his brother John.  He is survived by his sons Richard (Judy), Michael (Susan), step-daughter Patricia Stokes (Jimmy), grandson Michael Sean and great-grand children Zach and Zoey, as well as Dona Franks and Mary Stokes, daughters of Patricia.  The family would like to thank caregivers Vera Boswell, Maria Hardy, Gloria Jones, and Theresa Santiago for the love and care they provided Floralee and Stacy and their support for our family.  A memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church of Madison, Sunday July 18th at 2:00 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Morgan County Humane Society.
