Sherrie McDaniel Owen, age 67 of Madison, Georgia, passed away on March 5, 2021 after an extended illness. The daughter of Vivian Pyles McDaniel and Charles Walter McDaniel, Sherrie was born April 23, 1953 in Macon, Georgia.  

Sherrie grew up in Athens, Georgia.   She graduated from the University of Georgia, and later went on to get her Specialist degree in Education.  She met her husband, Lanier Owen, in Athens, while attending the University and they were married 48 years.  The couple started their married life in Madison, Georgia, where they raised their children.  Sherrie taught for 31 years in Morgan County before health forced her to retire.  She loved teaching and mentoring students in the gifted program at MCES.  Over the 31 years, she received many accolades from staff, parents, and students.  Sherrie was a faithful member of Madison Presbyterian Church and sang soprano in the church choir until she was limited by her health. 

Sherrie was very creative and used her many talents in painting, gardening and genealogy.  She was a talented artist and an active member of the Madison’s Artist Guild for many years and enjoyed the time she spent with its members. Sherrie was known for her beautiful floral watercolor paintings and Santa gourds. She was also an avid gardener with a particular interest in native Southern plants and flowers; she often shared the flowers in her garden with others.  Genealogy inspired her. She was passionate in researching her family tree and found many lost members of her family. 

Sherrie enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She enjoyed many family reunions with aunts, uncles and cousins over the years.  There were many good times shared at the family lake house.  Her children and grandchildren were her greatest joy.

Sherrie is survived by her husband, James Lanier Owen of Madison, GA.  She is also survived by her children Jonathan Lanier Owen and daughter-in-law Leigh Owen; Charles David Owen and daughter-in-law Ginger Owen; Michael Christopher Owen all of Madison, GA.  She is also survived by her grandchildren, Clayton David Owen, Camryn Leigh Owen, Bailey Kay Owen, Reese Callum Owen, Trenton Miles Rhoades and Ian James Peterson.

Sherrie is also survived by a sister, Patricia McDaniel Brook (Ted), and brothers, Charles Walter McDaniel, Jr. and David Lamar McDaniel (Angie). She is also survived by her niece Rachel McDaniel and nephew Mark McDaniel.  Sherrie’s parents preceded her in death.

A private family funeral will be held on March 9th.  The family requests that those wishing to make donations in Sherrie’s memory make them to Madison Presbyterian Church, 382 S Main Street, Madison, GA  30650, or to the Madison’s Artist Guild, 125 W Jefferson Street, Madison, GA, 30650, or other charity of personal choice.
