Marvin Newsome Obituary

Marvin Clarke Newsome, 89, passed away on June 26, 2022 at his home in Madison.  He was born April 26, 1933.  His parents ere the late Rufus Clarke Newsome and Willie Maude Newsome.  He was preceded in death by his sister Lois Cole and his brother Charlie (Rock) Newsome.  He was formerly married to the late, Beryl Adair Newsome.  Marvin had one sone, Clarke Adair Newsome who preceded him in death in February 2019.  He lived his entire life in Morgan County.

Marvin was known to his friends as Chunk.  He played football at West Georgia College, but before graduating he joined the United States Navy and served on a destroyer during the Korean Conflict.  He was extremely proud of his service to his country and was honored to be called a United States veteran.

After returning home from Korea, he went into business with his father and owned Newsome and Son’s Service Station on North Main Street in Madison.   His son, Clarke, joined him in the business after father died in 1979.  Later he purchased his beloved farm on Sandy Creek Road and built Newsome’s Country Store on the corner of Highway 83 and Sandy Creek Road.  Marvin and his son sole the store in 2009 and Marvin devoted his time to tending his cows.  He was an outdoorsman.  He loved quail hunting and trained his own dogs, dove hunting and fishing.  He enjoyed playing cards with friends and telling stories about the past.  He was an avid sports fan and rarely missed watching any Georgia football game, Braves game or Falcons game.  His greatest love was spending time with his grandson, Bobby.  Marvin was a devoted and proud grandfather.

He is survived by his only grandson, Robert Clarke (Bobby) Newsome and Andrea of Augusta and his daughter-in-law, Pam Newsome.
