John “Marshall” Conner, 76, of Greensboro, GA, passed away on Tuesday, August 22, 2023 surrounded by his loving wife, Gwen and his children at St. Mary's Hospital in Athens, GA after succumbing to complications from a heart attack.
Marshall was born on May 12, 1947 to Maxie and Thelma Conner in Madison, GA. He graduated from Morgan County High School in 1965 where he lettered in multiple sports but his fondest memories centered on the lifelong friendships he made while playing football. After high school, he went on to study mechanical engineering and graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1970. During this time he was a Naval ROTC Scholarship recipient and a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity.
After graduating from college, he served as a United States Naval Officer from 1969 to 1973. He met the love of his life, Gwen while on leave in Madison, Ga. They were married in 1972. Upon the completion of his military service, Marshall began his 34-year-long career with Georgia Power where he served in numerous management positions throughout the state of Georgia including Atlanta, Conyers, Augusta, Waynesboro, and Valdosta.
The latter part of Marshall's career with Georgia Power took place in Valdosta, GA where he and his wife Gwen were active in their church and many community civic-based organizations. Marshall took great pride in his leadership roles with Rotary, Friends of Moody Air Force Base, the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, and the YMCA.
Marshall and Gwen were fortunate to be a part of many amazing communities on their journey throughout the state of Georgia. They were especially fond of the opportunities to give back and the friendships they made along the way.
Marshall was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Greensboro, GA.
He is preceded in death by his mother, father, and his sister, Maxine Nabors. He is survived by his wife, Gwen Conner, son, Chandler Conner, and daughter, Meredith(Ed) Baldridge of Brevard, NC. Marshall is also survived by 7 grandchildren. Madison, Mackensie, and Morgan Baldridge of Brevard, NC as well as Coley, Pace, Clarke, and Worth Conner of Bogart, GA. He is also survived by brother-in-law Michael Nabors, sister-in-law Patti(Dee) Swymer, and brother-in-law Michael(Marilyn) Poole along with several nieces and nephews.
Friends and family are invited to services which will be held on Monday, August 28, 2023 at the Greensboro First United Methodist Church South Campus on Carey Station Rd at 3:00pm. The family will receive friends prior to the service at the church from 2:00-3:00pm. Graveside services immediately to follow in Madison, Ga.
