Leonard Lancaster Bradbury, 98, died Thursday, May 4, 2023, at The Madison where he had resided for the past year. He was predeceased by Sybil Tumlin Bradbury, his wife of 70 years.
Born March 28, 1928, in Jackson County, Georgia, Len was the second of five children born to Rubye Lancaster and Leonard Josiah Bradbury. Len graduated from Martin Institute in Jefferson, Georgia in 1941. He entered the Marine Corps in 1943 and was posted to the Pacific corridor during World War II. After the war he was employed by Southern Bell Telephone & Telegraph Company where he worked until his retirement in 1984.
Len is survived by his five children, Rebecca Brown (David), Barbara Scott, Julie Hughes (Tony), Emily Jones (Ken), and Bill Bradbury (Candee). Len also is survived by ten grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Len has one remaining sister, Jane Grotheer, of Aiken, South Carolina.
Len was an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars for many years. He also enjoyed years of hunting with his brothers-in-law, keeping a well-manicured yard, and being active in the Everett Armour Sunday School Class at First Baptist Church of Madison.
Len’s children and grandchildren will miss his quiet presence and sweet smile but are comforted by knowing their parents are together again. A memorial service is planned on Thursday, May 25, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at Madison Baptist Church. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
