Julia Hughes Blackwell of Newborn died March 17, 2021. Julia was born December 29, 1938 to Thomas Grady Hughes and Kathleen Fields Hughes in Gainesville, Georgia. She married John “Jack” Frank Blackwell, Jr. on March 9, 1958. Her family moved to Jasper County when she was three. Julia graduated from Morgan County High School and attended the University of Georgia. She majored in commercial art there until she married Jack. Together they made their home in Newborn where Jack operated a dairy farm. Julia was a stay-at-home mom. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, and sewing. After her children were out of the house, she decided to sell antiques in antique malls. She was still doing this up until a month before her death. Julia and Jack enjoyed traveling and visited all but five states. Julia is preceded in death by Jack, her husband of 48 years, and her son, Wade Frank Blackwell. She is also preceded in death by her brother Ross Brown Hughes. She is survived by her daughter, Lissa Blackwell Phelps (Garry) of Madison and Wade’s wife, Patricia “Trish” Jordan Blackwell of Loganville. Also surviving are grandchildren, Ryan Phelps Marbutt (Casey), Grant Blackwell Phelps, Jennifer "Jenny" Nicole Blackwell and Amanda "Mandy" Jordan Blackwell. She has one great-grandson, Jack Woodrow Marbutt. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Morgan Medical Center Transitional Care Unit. A. E. Carter Funeral Home in Madison was in charge of arrangements.
