Jerrell Evans Sheppard, 87 of Madison, Georgia passed away February 17, 2024. Mr. Sheppard was born to Jerry Andrew and Janie Catherine Shepherd September 26, 1936 in McDuffie County, GA. At an early age, the family moved to Madison and he attended Morgan County schools where he was a proud member of the Beta Club. After graduating from Morgan County High School, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served a tour of duty in Korea before he was honorably discharged because of his father’s death.
He was employed with the United States Post Office, later owned S&Y Heating and Air Conditioning with Charles Young and finally returned to the USPS until his retirement in 1999. He also worked a few part time jobs until his health forced him to ultimately retire at the age of 80.
Mr. Sheppard enjoyed square dancing, camping, and barbecuing on the grill with family. As a rabid University of Georgia Bulldawg football fan he could always be seen wearing a UGA National Championship ball cap and his signature overalls. He was a talented wood worker and made many treasured pieces of furniture for family and friends. He was loved by his family and will be greatly missed.
Mr. Sheppard was predeceased by his parents and brother-in-law George Hanes. He is survived by his children Connie Slate and Brian, Jerrie Tice and Patrick, and Gregory Alan Sheppard; grandson Andrew Ruark and Shannon; granddaughters Emily O’Neal and Justin and Rebecca McGraw and Matt, and Mackinlee, Caroline and Davis Slate as well as great grandchildren Isabelle, Evan, Charlotte, Milo, Ava and Ila. He is also survived by his sister, Dorothy Hanes of Madison, his nieces, nephews, and best friend, Suellen Sheppard.
A graveside service is planned for Thursday February 22, 2024 at 11:00 am at Madison City Cemetery with the Rev. Griffin Gulledge officiating. Memorial donations may be made to Parkinson’s Foundation at www.parkinson.org or to a favorite charity. A. E. Carter Funeral Home of Madison is in charge of arrangements.
