James Hubert NeSmith, 73 of Madison, passed away on June 18, 2023. Jim was born in Savannah on January 29, 1950 to Hubert and Eloise NeSmith. His birth mother died when Jim was four years old. His father remarried and Jim considered Helen Clardy NeSmith his mother. He grew up in Decatur, graduating from Decatur High School in 1968. Jim attended Dekalb Technical College until joining the U.S. Army in 1969. Jim served in Vietnam and upon returning to the states, Jim married Vicki Cadle on October 9, 1971. He continued to serve in the Army until 1990. During his service, Jim was stationed at the Atlanta Army Depot, Materiel Command. He also served in Germany in the 3rd Armored Division, San Antonio, Seoul, South Korea and Fort McClellan, AL. Upon retirement in 1990, Jim and Vicki moved to Madison, GA. Jim was very active in Morgan County. He was a member and deacon of Madison Baptist Church and served as the Church Administrator from 1995 until 2022. He was also active in and served as Commander of the American Legion Calvin George Post for many years.
Jim NeSmith is survived by his wife of over 51 years, Vicki and their daughter, Lara Jean NeSmith Tray. He also leaves two grandchildren, Emma Park Tray and Michael James Tray. Jim also is survived by a sister, Ann Benton as well as other extended family.
Jim loved his country and his local community. He enjoyed traveling, camping trips and time spent in their mountain cabin. Jim’s quiet leadership and organization will be missed.
The family of Jim NeSmith will receive friends on Wednesday, June 21 from 10-11 Am at Madison Baptist Church. The funeral service will be held at 11 AM. Military honors will be provided by the Fort Gordon Funeral Honors team as well as the American Legion Calvin George Post. Interment will take place later at the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, TX.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Madison Baptist Church or to the Wounded Warrior Project.
