James Fenton Small, Jr (Chesty) was born April 8, 1946, in Houston, Texas. He died January 3, 2025, in Athens, Georgia.
As a child, the family moved to Charleston, South Carolina where he lived till he was 13. The family then moved to Madison, Georgia where they bought and ran WYTH radio. He broadcast at this station for 35 years. Jim attended Andrew College and was in the National Guard for 18 years. He became a master knife maker and engraver. His work was sold to customers all over the world. He received national and international awards including Best in Show at the world's largest knife show in New York City. Jim created a knife making and engraving series which shown all over the country.
He leaves a wife, Anne, 5 children and stepchildren, and was blessed with 13 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Preston W. Small is his only sibling.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, at 11 AM in the chapel of A.E. Carter Funeral Home. Interment will be in Madison City Cemetery at a later date.
