Harold Grow Obituary

Harold C. (Hal) Grow was found deceased in his home in Madison, Georgia on Monday, December 13, 2021.  He was 79 years old.  He had suffered from Parkinson’s Disease for several years, and it is believed he died of natural causes.

Hal is survived by his two children, David Grow of Shreveport, Louisiana and Roselyn Grow of Endicott, New York, and a grandson Matthew Krajnyk of Lincoln, Nebraska.  Hal also had two cats of whom he was quite fond.

Hal was born February 10, 1942 to Harold Clifford Grow and Alma Love Grow in Leesburg, Virginia.  Hal told the story of his delivering a sermon during a Youth Sunday at his church.  People were so taken with his sermon that they felt sure he was being called to ministry.  When Hal told his family he would not be pursuing a theology major, his own father suddenly felt the call, entered seminary and became a Baptist Minister serving several churches in the Tallahassee, FL area.  After graduating from high school, Hal instead went to work in the insurance industry.  He worked most of his career for the Aetna Insurance Company serving in their Scranton, PA; Baton Rouge, LA and Charlotte, NC offices.  When his company asked him to move to Cleveland, OH, Hal instead chose to retire at the young age of 42.  He owned a bakery for a short time in Aiken, SC before moving to Madison, GA in the early 1990’s.

Throughout his life, Hal was an avid runner and competed in the Boston Marathon five times. He then turned to cycling and was known to ride his bike 40 to 50 miles each day around Madison and the surrounding towns.

Hal was an active member of the Madison Episcopal Church of the Advent, and his family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hal’s Church.  Hal’s Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, December 29, 2021 at 11 a.m. at the Madison Episcopal Church of the Advent.
