Gary Leon McCullough, 75, of Rutledge, Georgia passed away on Sunday, November 19th.
Gary was born in 1948 to Helen West Miller and Leon Mccullough. Gary was raised on his family farm by his grandparents, W. W. and Pauline West.
After graduating from Morgan county high school in 1967, he married the love of his life, Vivian Cofer Mccullough. They married in June 1968 and had 55 happy years together. Gary went to North Georgia technical school and studied heating and air conditioning after high school until he was drafted in 1968, not long after marrying his bride. Gary served his country in the US Army in Vietnam from 1968-1970. He was a combat veteran and received a Bronze star while in Vietnam. After returning from the war, he was a local farmer for years. He worked at the Pritchard peach shed before moving to Godfrey’s Feed and seed where he worked for 30+ years and retired in January 2016. He loved his job and loved people. He was well-known for his beautiful hummingbird gardens for many years and is a lifetime member of the Georgia Hummer Society. People came from all over to see his hummingbirds. Gary was a member of Centennial Baptist Church for over 50 years where he served as a past Sunday school superintendent, teacher, and Deacon for many years. Gary was a proud member of the VFW and American Legion local chapters where he served on the color guard in past years. Gary had a kidney transplant in July of 2001 by a living donor, his cousin Angie Hawk Crowley. This allowed him another 22 years with his family. Gary loved God, his country and his family. Gary and his wife Vivian have two girls, Tracie Elwer (Adam) and Teri Hilsman (Chris). He has three grandsons, Garrett, Samuel, and Addison. He has one granddaughter, Emily. He was so proud of all four of them.
He will be greatly missed by so many.
