It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Evelyn Lane Bates, who peacefully left this world on February 1, 2025, at the age of 80.
Born on July 4, 1944, Evelyn was the daughter of Clay Augustus Lane Sr. and Annie Kate Newton Lane. She was a loving wife to her husband, the late Robert Bates, and a devoted mother to Tracy Bates-Abbott of Madison.
Evelyn's life was marked by her dedication to her family and her community. She worked with great passion as a caseworker for the Department of Family and Children Services (DFCS), and later served in the Superior Court of Morgan County.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her beloved siblings: Nancy Kathryn Lane White, Sarah Ann Lane Fuss, and Clay M. Lane, Jr. She is survived by her daughter, Tracy Bates Abbott and son, Timothy Clayton Bates and a brother, Malcome E. Lane of Macon, as well as nieces, nephews, and extended family members who will deeply miss her warmth and kind spirit.
The family will receive friends on Friday, February 7 from 1-2:30pm at A.E. Carter Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 3pm at the Madison City Cemetery.
Evelyn's legacy of love, compassion, and service will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
