Peacefully and surrounded by his family at home, Mr. Elmer Hawk of Rutledge passed on December 2, 2024 at the age of 94. He was born August 12, 1930 to the late Claude F. Hawk and Cora Peters Hawk. He is survived by his beloved wife of 72 years, Carolyn Kennedy Hawk, and his four children Linda Benkoski (Tony) Bobby Hawk (Gail) Pam McKinley and Terri Todd (Robert). His loving family also includes his grandchildren Rocco Benkoski, Jerrod, Bradley and Adam Hawk, Jacob and Justin McKinley, Kalli, Will, Leah and Ben Todd, and many great grandchildren.
Elmer was born and raised in Morgan County before enlisting in the US Navy at age 20. He rose to the rank of Chief Petty Officer, serving honorably for over 20 years before he retired as a senior chief aviation mechanic and returned home. He concluded his working career at Morgan Memorial Hospital with another 20 years of service as a maintenance manager.
Mr. Hawk was a faithful servant of the Lord and a dedicated member of Sandy Creek Baptist Church. He was a talented musician who played the guitar at church services and performed with a Gospel Quartet and the church choir. He also enjoyed teaching others who wanted to learn to play. Elmer was passionate about encouraging others in their journey in Christ, so dedicated that he drove a bus to shuttle those in need to and from church services. His faith and kindness had a positive impact on many others.
Elmer will be deeply missed but will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. He had a big heart and a great compassion for others, therefore it was his request that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Disabled Veterans of America at www.DAV.org.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, December 8 from 1-2 PM at Sandy Creek Baptist Church. The funeral service will be held at 2 PM at Sandy Creek with interment following at Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery.
