Charles Ray Melton

Charles Ray Melton, 91 of Mansfield, passed away on March 16, 2026.  Charles was a native of Newton County.  He was born September 4, 1934 to Lewis Melton and Lucy Bell Hanes.  He was married to the late, Bobbie Payne.  Mr. Melton was a machinist and owned and operated Universal Machine Shop.  Charles was a member of Rutledge Baptist Church and loved his church family.  He loved golfing with friends and fishing.  Charles loved his family and spending time with his grandchildren.

Charles Melton is survived by his daughter, Marion Michelle Melton Smith (Tommy).  His grandchildren are Tawana Smith, Angela Jenkins, Ashley Harris, Talena Stowe, Brandon Harris, Dana Cote and Jeffrey Harris.  He also leaves many great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 18 from 5-7 PM at A.E. Carter Funeral Home.  The funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 19 at 11:30 AM in the chapel.  The burial will follow at Salem Historic Cemetery in Covington.
