Betty Bohannon Obituary

Betty Bond Bohannon July 17, 1925 - October 20, 2022

Betty Lucy Bond Bohannon, 97, of Rutledge, died peacefully surrounded by family at her home on Thursday, October 20.  She was the daughter of John Harvey Bond (deceased) and Dollye Missye Kimbell Bond (deceased). A native of Jackson, Georgia, she was raised in Jackson and Carnegie, Pennsylvania, with her older brother John Harvey Jr. (Jim—deceased) and her sister Dolly Ann (deceased). As a young woman, she joined the First Baptist Church of Jackson.

At sixteen, she married Franklin Shaw Bohannon (Bud) in a double wedding with his older brother Autrey Harper Bohannon and Mary Wingard. They had four children: Felton Harvey (Butch—married to Marsha Brandt), Connie Jane Friar (married to Daniel—deceased), Wendy Allison Gilbert (married to Timothy), and Kenneth Franklin Bohannon (Ken—married to Laura Cranston). She is also survived by grandchildren Andrea Christine Duckworth, Shannon Leigh Powers, Ashley Ann Krantz (Brent), Emily Jane Bohannon, Kenneth Gary Bohannon, Lauren Elizabeth Launius (Michael), Sarah Jean Rakestraw (Ryan), and Zachary Alexander Gilbert (Caylin) as well as twelve great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.

As an eighteen year old married woman with a child, Betty found a job as a spinner at Pepperton Cotton Mill in Jackson, Georgia. She continued to help support her family during the years her husband served in the Army and until 1960. She spent the next few years as a homemaker after her family moved to Tucker, Georgia. In 1968, the family moved to Lithonia, Georgia, where she joined the First Baptist Church there. Her volunteer job as a lunch room lady at her children’s elementary school, Rock Chapel School, turned into a paying job, from which she retired. In 1999, Bud and she moved next door to Ken and his family in Rutledge, and they helped raise Ken’s children, Gary, Lauren, and Sarah. They found a church home at Brownwood Baptist Church in Rutledge, GA.

Betty enjoyed traveling, cooking, crafting, genealogy, and spending time with her many family members. As long as she was able, she read her Bible from cover to cover every year. Throughout her life, she displayed great warmth, kindness, humor, and spirit.

We want to thank Betty’s caregivers Suzannah and Mattie. We also are grateful for the compassionate care she received from Family Hospice. Visitation will be held at A. E.
