William Corry Obituary

William James (Bill) Corry, 89 of Madison, Ga, passed away August 22, 2014.

Born May 27, 1925 in Union Point, GA, he was the son of the late William Joshua Corry and Velma McKinley Corry.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Julia Corry Kendrick and Anna Corry Younker and a brother, Kenneth Corry.

Educated in the Union Point school system, he attended North Georgia College for one year prior to enlistment in the United States Navy for service during World War II.  He served as a radio operator aboard a Navy PBY Catalina, flying air rescue and anti-submarine missions in the Aleutian Islands.  At the conclusion of the war he graduated from Piedmont College and earned a master’s degree from Peabody College and later a Specialist in Education degree from the University of Georgia.

He began his teaching and coaching career at Rockdale County High School and moved to Madison in 1953 to teach and coach various sports.  In 1956 he succeeded his friend and mentor, Coach Charlie Brake, as head football coach at Morgan County High School and over the next seven seasons his teams compiled a record of 78-6-3, winning state championships in 1956, 1958, 1959 and 1962.  In recognition of the success of “his boys”, he was inducted in to the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, having been presented for induction by his former player, the late Felton Jenkins.  He later served as a member of the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame Foundation board.  In addition, he was inducted into the Piedmont College Athletic Hall of Fame.

Upon concluding his coaching career at Morgan County, he served on the coaching staff at The  University of Georgia in 1963 while pursuing  a graduate degree in education administration.  He then served as principal of Winder-Barrow high School, Madison Elementary and Morgan County Elementary and Junior High, retiring in 1983.  Over the course of his teaching, coaching and administrative career, he had a positive impact on the lives of hundreds of students and teachers.

He loved Morgan County and served in many capacities as a volunteer, including as a board member of the Madison-Morgan Cultural Center and as a member, deacon, elder and long-time treasurer of Madison Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Hilda McCart Corry, daughter Susan Parker and husband, Tracy of Oakwood, GA and their son, Corry of Athens, step-grandson Lt. Col Worth Parker and wife, Katy and daughter Annabelle of Wilmington, NC.  Mr. Corry also leaves a son, Mac Corry and wife, Jody and their children, Will and Ellen of Bogart, GA along with brothers, Dr. Larry Corry and wife, Carleen of Buford, GA and Robert Corry and wife Eloise of Kennesaw, GA, brother-in-law Robert Harold Kendrick and wife, Myrtle of Crawfordville, GA as well as many nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to: Madison Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 382 S. Main Street Madison, Ga 30650;  Madison-Morgan Cultural Center, 434 S. Main Street Madison, GA  30650; or to Morgan County High School Athletic Department, 1231 College Drive Madison, GA 30650.

Visitation is scheduled from 2:00 – 5:00pm on Sunday, August 24, at A.E. Carter Funeral Home, 1670 Atlanta Highway Madison, GA.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00pm on Tuesday, August 26 at Madison First United Methodist Church, 296 S. Main Street Madison, GA with Rev. Charles R. hasty officiating.  Visitation will follow in the fellowship hall.
