Robert Edwards Moorhead passed away peacefully July 24, 2019 at the age of 92. He was born June 25, 1927 to the late Bascomb and Catherine Jones Moorhead. He is preceded in death by his wife of 31 years, Sarah Smith Moorhead; brothers, Mason Moorhead and Alex Moorhead; a sister, Sara Thompson and a great grandson, Dean Smith.
Big Bob, as he was affectionately known, attended North Georgia College. He served in the United States Army in the 126th Army security service and was stationed for part of his tour in occupied Japan.
Mr. Moorhead was a member of Bethany Baptist Church and served as a deacon and trustee. He was a long-time member of Madison Lion’s Club and received the Jones Award for faithful service.
He was a master carpenter and the family is blessed with many treasures from his love of woodworking.
Mr. Moorhead was a long-time dairy and beef farmer until he retired in 1991. He and his wife loved to travel and he had visited all fifty states. He celebrated his 89th birthday in Alaska while visiting his great-grandson, Trey Bruce and his family.
Mr. Moorhead is survived by a daughter, Carolyn (Roger) Bruce of Madison, Son, Richard (Clara) Smith of Columbus, Six grandchildren, Twelve great-grandchildren and two great-great granddaughters. He is also survived by a sister-in-law, Jan Moorhead of Eatonton and many nieces and nephews.
Big Bob was a quiet, gentle man who stepped into a ready-made family and quickly became a cherished part. He will be greatly missed.
The family received friends on Thursday, July 25 from 5-7 pm at A.E. Carter Funeral Home. The funeral service was held at Bethany Baptist Church on Friday, July 26 at 10 am. Interment followed at Faith Memory Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Source of Light Ministries for the Braille Ministry or to Bethany Baptist Church.
