Samuel Morris Phelps (Pop), age 86, died September 29, 2019. Mr. Phelps was born February 10, 1933 in Walton County. Mr. Phelps was the son of Willie Ed Phelps and Janie Whitley Phelps. Mr. Phelps was born to sharecroppers. He lived all his life in Morgan County moving from farm to farm with his parents and siblings. He began driving a school bus at the age of sixteen. Mr. Phelps began his career working with Jack Youngblood at what became Youngblood Motor Company. In March of 1963, Mr. Phelps started Phelps Welding and Radiator. He continued to come to work every day until his passing. He was married to the late, Mazelle Holbert in 1952. They made their home in Morgan County where they raised their children, Gail, Neal and Garry. Mr. Phelps enjoyed the outdoors. He especially loved to quail hunt. He enjoyed working his garden, tending all of his animals and his farm. He also enjoyed restoring his antique automobiles and John Deere tractors. Most of all, Mr. Phelps loved his family, especially the grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Mr. Phelps was preceded in death by his wife, Mazelle Holbert Phelps. His was preceded in death by his brothers Howard Phelps & Peggy, James (Sonny) Phelps and his three sisters Mary Anderson & Paul, Betty Stevenson & Russell, and Shirley Wiley & Billy. He is survived by his brothers, Jerry Phelps & Carolyn and Don Phelps & Reba. He is survived by his children, Gail Malcom & Grail, Neal Phelps & Melissa and Garry Phelps & Lissa. He leaves grandchildren, Michael Nichols, Adam Nichols & Brandy, Ryan Marbutt & Casey, Britni Phelps, and Grant Phelps. Great grandchildren are Samantha (Sam) and Mazelle (Mazie) Nichols and Jack Marbutt.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 2 from 5-8 PM at A.E. Carter Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at 10 AM in the chapel on Thursday, October 3, 2019. Interment will follow at the Apalachee Cemetery.
