Joe Brown Obituary

Mr. Joe Floyd Brown, 83 of Madison, passed away January 6, 2020. Mr. Brown was born on September 17, 1936 in Rabun County. He was the youngest of 10 children born to Fred and Christine Henslee Brown, and he was married to Retha Tillery Brown. Above everything, Mr. Brown was a devoted Christian who avidly studied the Bible and strived to spread the love of Christ to everyone he met. He was also a retired dairyman and a contractor with Georgia Pacific in Madison, Georgia. After his retirement, Mr. Brown refinished furniture as a hobby, planted and grew a delicious vegetable garden, and tinkered with his tractor in his spare time. He was a life-long baseball fan and always enjoyed watching the Braves. His family remembers him being the master of “dad jokes” and always making someone laugh.

Mr. Joe Brown was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. His legacy of giving unconditional love and encouraging peace that passes all understanding lives on with each family member and person who ever came in contact with him.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Retha Tillery Brown, his three children, Adele Shiver, Michael and Lynn Brown, and Sammie and Christy Brown, his grandchildren, JD Shiver, Samantha Shiver, Jessica Brown, Margaret Brown, Carter Brown, Emma Vaughan, Bryant Benkoski, Brittany Benkoski, and Bradley Benkoski, and his great-grandchildren, Layla Hubbard, Owen Benkoski, Bailey Benkoski, Aiden Benkoski, Brody Benkoski, Addison Benkoski, Aubree Benkoski, and Judson Smith.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 8th, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at A.E. Carter Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, January 9th, in the chapel of A.E. Carter Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Brownwood Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Brown was a five-year cancer survivor and the family asks that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to University Cancer & Blood Center, 3320 Old Jefferson Road, Building 700, Athens, Georgia 30607.
