Hilda Corry Obituary

Hilda Winifred McCart Corry died October 11, 2018, in Watkinsville, Georgia.  She was born in Rockdale County on May 8, 1927, the youngest of five daughters born to Ruth Suese Almand McCart and Walter Lewis McCart.  She attended Smyrna Elementary School in Rockdale County where her mother was her seventh grade teacher and principal.  In eighth grade, her family moved to Conyers after her father was elected Rockdale County sheriff.  She graduated from Conyers High School in 1944.  Following in her mother’s footsteps, she graduated from Georgia State College for Women in 1947 with a degree in home economics.  During her first teaching job in Union Point, Georgia, she met and married her husband of 65 years, William James (Bill) Corry.  They married August 16, 1949.  They lived in Toccoa and Demorest where she taught school while her husband continued his education that had been interrupted by WWII.  Upon his graduations from Piedmont College and Peabody College, they both taught in Conyers.  In 1954, they moved to Madison, Georgia (Morgan County), the place and people she called home for the rest of her life.

 

She taught home economics at Morgan County High School.  After graduate work at the University of Georgia, she taught Georgia history at Winder Junior High School before returning to Morgan County to teach at Buckhead Elementary and Morgan County Middle School  She retired as school food services coordinator for the Morgan County School System.

 

A long-time member of Madison Presbyterian Church, she was awarded lifetime membership in Presbyterian Women and was an active worker at all church events for many years.

 

She enjoyed traveling to all 48 contiguous states and attending UGA football games and Atlanta Braves spring trainings.  She especially enjoyed her regular lunches with members of Conyers High School class of 1944, as well as with her close friends in Madison.

 

She resided her last years at Highland Hills in Watkinsville, Georgia, but replied “Madison” when asked where she was from.

 

She was predeceased by her parents, husband, and sisters Lavinia McCart Lindley and Olivia McCart Haydel.  She is survived by daughter and son-in-law Susan and Tracy Parker, son and daughter-in-law Mac and Jody Corry, grandchildren Corry Parker, Will Corry, Ellen Corry, step grandson LtCol Worth Parker and wife Katy and daughter Annabelle, sisters Ellen McCart Trainer and Dorothy McCart Cornwell, brothers-in-law Robert and Eloise Corry, Larry and Carleen Corry, Robert Harold and Myrtle Kendrick, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be at noon Monday, October 15 at A.E. Carter Funeral Home; 1670 Atlanta Highway; Madison, Georgia, officiated by Reverend Charles R. Hasty.  Visitation will be Sunday, October 14 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
