Gene Richard Smith, 85 of Madison, died October 5, 2017.  He passed peacefully at his home.  He was born in Carmel, NY on May 12, 1932. To George and Pearl Ganun Smith.  After accepting Jesus Christ as his Saviour while a student at Cornell University in New York state, Gene dedicated his life to serving the Lord. Along with his wife, Claire, he served as a missionary in Tunisia, Africa, and worked in Christian children's home ministries for over 25 years. He later served at Source of Light Ministries in Madison, GA until his retirement in 2004. Throughout his life, Gene taught Sunday School and youth groups and also served as a deacon and a church treasurer. He was an officer in the Army during the Korean War.  Gene was a farmer at heart who used his agricultural knowledge and skills wherever he went, whether it was teaching children how to drive a tractor, milk cows, and plant a garden or in sharing the bounty of his own garden with his neighbors.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 59 years, Claire Petrie Smith and their children, Neal (Debbie) Smith of Clinton, SC, Beth (Greg) Silver of Anderson, SC, Eileen (Randy) Atkinson of Pageland, SC, and Verne (Deborah) Smith of Altamonte Springs, FL.  He leaves thirteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.  Mr. Smith is also survived by a brother, George Smith and a sister, Hilda Remer.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 14 at 11 AM at New Hope Baptist Church.  The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 10 AM.  Interment will follow the service at the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to New Hope Baptist Church or Source of Light Ministries.
